FAQ About Benifuki Green Tea

What is Methylated Catechins?

EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) is the major catechin in green tea. It can be found on green tea than in black or other kinds of tea. Methylated catechins is a methylated form of EGCG that can be found on green tea too and mostly found in Benifuuki green tea. It is a natural antioxidant and allergy reliever. It is one of the reasons why green tea usually tastes bitter. Wait, Japanese green tea still tastes naturally sweet and good. It is a tasty healthy drink. Vegan and Organic. You can make it tastier and yummier but you still have to take note of the amount of healthy ingredients versus the processed sugar, salt and fat to be used in making delicious green tea drinks and desserts. The natural the ingredients, the better.

Is green tea supposed to taste bitter?

Methylated Catechins makes green tea have very bitter taste but since Benifuuki green tea is cultivated by Chagusaba Method using sugarcane soil, it does not taste that bitter after all. With rich and quality dirt, the tea becomes naturally sweet and healthy. No need to add any spices or condiments. The natural green tea taste is enough for you to want to make a cup again.

What are the benefits of the Methylated Catechins?

It prevents allergies and it makes you feel better when sick. It also helps to lower cholesterol levels according to an experiment done in Japan.

Methylated Catechins are chemical elements that inhabit the mast cell response. Because of it, the green tea can prevent allergies, hay fever and MCAD.

MCAD means Mast Cell Activation Disorder - a condition in which mast cells inappropriately and excessively release chemical mediators.

The Methylated catechins fights the allergies better than the normal EGCG meaning you will get a relief from runny nose, sore throat and other forms of allergies.

How can Methylated Catechins fight allergies?

Methylated catechins blocks the immunoglobulin then, the histamines. These 2 compounds trigger and sustain the allergic reaction. Immunoglobulin, a.k.a the IgE, are attached to the mast cells and when it detects the incoming allergen, the IgE makes the mast cells release chemicals mediators including histamines. Rest, take your medicine and have a cup of green tea for faster recovery.

Green tea has many health benefits and it has mild caffeine compared to other kinds of teas. Versatile tea for workout, beauty, improving state of mind and many more. Green tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world and no wonder why many companies are producing their own green tea. The best matcha green teas are made and imported from Japan. Compared to other green teas where these were dried directly, Japanese green teas are steamed then dried to prevent oxidation (oxidation example is when a sliced apple becomes brown in color). Matcha snacks are also popular and even big snack brands are making matcha flavors so they will gain more patrons and scan share a different variation of their beloved food products.

How to store green tea powder?

To not lose color, scent, and flavor, you can prolong the freshness of green tea by storing it on a tightly sealed container

How do I make a cup of Green tea?

For 1 cup serving of Benifuuki tea, stir 1 stick pack with 3.5 Oz (100cc) of hot or cold water or milk using spoon or bamboo whisk if you have one (Suggested to drink 4 times a day for relieving allergy and hay fever). No strainer or teapot needed.  For pyramid tea sachet bag, each of it will make 2 to 3 full-bodied steeping cups or a full pot of tasty Japanese green tea in just a few minutes.

How to make it yummier or tastier?

Mix the green tea with honey, cinnamon, milk, ginger or other healthy syrups or powders.  You can make a green tea latte or smoothie by putting the powder in the blender first, add the milk and other ingredients. It can be used too for baked goods and desserts. Just don’t overeat or don’t use too much salt, sugar and fat because it defeats the purpose why you are taking green tea at the first place.

What is so special about your green tea?

Our green tea is the best-selling Japanese green tea in Japan online. The reason is simple: it tastes good, and most of our customers are repeat customers who come back for more.

Our tea is grown using the Chagusaba method. The Chagusaba Method is a traditional green tea farming method used for centuries in areas where plants such as the Japanese silver grass are cut and used as organic fertilizer between autumn and winter.Plants are cut into small pieces and are carefully placed on the ground of the farmland. This increases the ground temperature and moisture in the dirt, which fertilizes the soil better. Japanese silver grass also contains many silicic acids, which are excellent for making the dirt richer. This process is highly labor-intensive, but the tradition has been followed for centuries in the area to create the best green tea.

Are your products vegan?

Yes. All our products are 100% Vegan and 100% natural. No artificial flavors are added.

Is your tea made in Japan?

Yes. All our products are 100% made in Japan. Within Japan, our tea farms are located in the area that is known for the best green tea production in Japan, Shizuoka by Mt. Fuji.

Please see About Us Page for more information.

Is it Gluten Free?

Yes. All our products are Gluten free.

Is it GMO-Free?

Yes. All our products are GMO free and cruelty-free.

What is the cultivar of your tea?

All our green tea are Yabukita  (やぶきた) cultivar except for Benifuuki which is Benifuuki cultivar.

Is there nutritional information regarding tea?

When you go to the specific product you are interested in, scroll down and you will see the “Nutrition Facts” tab, and there you can see all the nutritional information.

Are your tea blended, meaning blended with tea leaves from different plantations/cultivars, or do most come from a single plantation?

None of our Japanese green tea is blended. They all come from our farm in Shizuoka and single cultivar (Yabukita orBenifuuki forBenifuuki products).

Does your matcha have any filler?

Absolutely not. Our matcha is 100% pure matcha and no filler is used.

How to brew Japanese green tea?

I don’t know which tea to try first. Which tea do you recommend?

We have created a video and blog post about this. Please click here or the image below.

9 Most Popular Japanese Tea Types

The world of Japanese green tea is vast and wonderful, but it is sometimes confusing with all the terms used. For this reason, we have created a Glossary of Japanese Green Tea with a chart so that you can decide which one would be best for you. Please refer to the Glossary of Japanese Green Tea for more information.

If you are new to green tea, we usually recommend Nozomi, which is very popular as it tastes similar to widely known Gyokuro Tea but without a high price tag.

If you want to use it for baking and cooking, powdered form matcha is excellent. You can make lattes, smoothies or simply add it to ice cream!

If you are looking for diet tea, consider our award-winning diet Pu-erh Tea. This has natural dieting elements that are much higher than other types of tea.

If you have hay fever or allergies, Benifuuki Green Tea has natural elements which block histamines and alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of seasonal allergies, hives, and eczema.

If you want cold green tea, try our Gokuzyo Aracha Teabag. And here is an article about how you can cold brew Japanese green tea.

If you like the aroma of green tea, you would love our Aracha (Crude Tea), which has the wild aroma of green tea which tea farmers have consumed for centuries.

If you want low caffeine tea or if you want to drink tea at night, you will want to try our low caffeine Hojicha.

If you want the best of the best, no other tea can beat Issaku Premium.  (limited quantity available).

We have created a whole article about how to select Japanese green tea. Please click here or click on the image below to read more about this.

9 Most Popular Japanese Tea Types - Which tea is good for me?

What tea is the best to lose weight/mix in with smoothies? I saw you have a specific tea for weight loss, but it is tea leaves, and in bags, so I did not think that would work. Do you have any recommendations?

For losing weight with a smoothie, we still suggest using Diet Puerh Tea.

Since this is not in powdered form, you must steep them first and then mix them into a smoothie.Since this is not in a powdered form, you should steep them first and then mix them into a smoothie. You can follow the instructions under the “loose leaf tea” section of our article How to Make Green Tea Smoothies.

The other option is our matcha. Although not as much as the diet tea above, matcha does have chemical properties for losing weight. You can find it here: Premium Matcha

I've heard that green tea is good for health. Is it true?

Yes, it is. Since Japanese green tea isless processed than other types of tea, the health effects are known to be greater than different types of tea.  Please check ourJapanese Green Tea and Health blog for all health-related articles related to Japanese Green Tea.

Do you have any decaffeinated or low-caffeine tea?

Although we do not offer  decaffeinated tea, our hojicha is very popular as it has significantly less caffeine. This hojicha is enjoyed by the elderly and kids in Japan as the tea has minimal caffeine. It is also safe for a pregnant woman to drink this tea. Click here to see our hojicha.

What about the Expiration Date?

We get all our freshly picked green tea from Japan every week. Most of our products have an expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing, so you will have enough time to enjoy your green tea! The date of Manufacturing and expiration are printed on each package.

How long is the tea good after opening?

The tea is good for one year from manufacturing, even after you open the package.

However, we strongly encourage you to seal the tea in an airtight container, such as multiple zip lock bags and store it in a dark, cool place or refrigerator for retaining good taste.

Tea absorbs other odors quickly; therefore, please ensure your package is air-tight.  We also recommend Airscape, which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with tea as well. Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.

We suggest tea be refrigerated but not frozen. If you decide to refrigerate, please make sure that you isolate the tea from other food by putting it in an air-tight canister or using multiple layers of zip lock bags. Tea absorbs odors quickly, and the last thing you want is to have your tea absorb other food odors.  We also recommend Airscape which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with tea as well. I've heard that Matcha can be consumed even years after production.

We do not offer aged matcha.

All our matcha products are freshly cropped and packaged with an expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing.

Some companies indeed offer aged matcha; however, the environment to age tea has to be controlled and maintained carefully to retain the quality without the spread of bacteria for safely facilitating the aging of matcha; we do not sell this kind of matcha, and we do not recommend eating old matcha which is has not been aged safely.

What is the best water to use for Green Tea?

Green tea is best prepared with soft water with fewer minerals. If you have a water softener filter system, use the water filtered by the softener. If you use bottled water, try avoiding ones with "Added Minerals," as they tend to distort the tea flavor.

If you have access to Evian, it will taste better as Evian is known for soft water

Everything You Need To Know About Water And Japanese Green Tea

I am worried about radioactive materials in products made in Japan.

Our tea is 100% safe from radioactive materials. Here is a link to an official test resultof radioactive material, and it indicates that there are no radioactive elements found in our tea. (This is a link to an English Translation of the Report.)  Please note that this test was conducted in 2012, one year after the Fukushima accident in March of 2011. Even after many years of the incident, we keep testing and ensuring that no harmful materials are in our tea.

I'd like to know the different ways in which I can consume green tea. Is it good with honey, or should I just drink it plain?

In Japan, people usually consume green tea plain without adding sugar or honey.  However, in other countries such as in US and India, it is common to drink with honey which doespairvery well. We have compiled some green tea recipes such assparklingtea with lemon and fruit tea. Sign up to our newsletter to get the recipe for free.

Nutrition Facts

Nutrition Facts - Benifuki Candy

  • The amount of tea in each Benifuuki candy is about 0.12g (Each candy is 4g, with tea making up 2.9% of it).
  • The caffeine content is about 2mg. (1.6g/100g, 0.016g/1g, 0.016g × 0.12g = approximately 0.002g)

Benifuuki green tea (Also written sometimes as Benifuki) is a type of green tea that is booming in Japan due to being good for relieving allergies such as seasonal allergies, cedar allergies, and hay fever. A study has also shown that Benifuuki is good for MCAD (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome).

This is candy made from Benifuuki tea with menthol and low calorie.

When you feel the allergy outside, have one candy on the go, and you will feel better.

Benifuuki contains high levels of Methylated Catechins, one of the highest of EGCG among tea.

Methylated Catechins inhibits the mast cell response, which leads to preventing allergies and hay fever.

Methylated Catechins are generally known for bitterness and astringency; however, the Arahataen research team created a specific type of natural dirt to grow Benifuuki, which allows more Methylated Catechins to remain in the tea yet retain aroma and flavor by reducing the bitterness and astringency.

How to Use: Each candy is sealed and warped, so you just open the wrap and enjoy!

Health Benefits

Alleviates allergies - Methylated Catechins inhibit the mast cell response, which leads to preventing allergies and hay fever.

Helps with detox and metabolism - improves the liver's ability to break down fat, possibly aiding in the prevention of obesity.

Help high blood pressure - Clinical trials have shown that Benifuuki green tea suppressed high blood pressure to a significantly greater extent than green tea that did not contain methylated EGCGs.

Incredible skin benefits - the methylated catechins reduce the same histamines that cause many skin irritations, such as eczema and hives.
